Investors in the Environment

Working with Investors in the Environment

At Elanco Animal Health, the UK and Ireland Commercial office is working with Investors in the Environment (iiE) to achieve environmental certification of our sustainability actions.

What is ‘Investors in the Environment’?

Investors in the Environment (iiE) is a national environmental accreditation scheme. It is designed to help organisations save money, reduce their impact on the environment, and get promoted for their green credentials.”

The pathway to certification requires that we:

  • Develop an effective Environmental Policy
  • Measure our use of resources and waste produced, including our carbon footprint
  • Implement a plan to reduce environmental harm
  • Engage staff and communicate our actions and successes

Upon successful implementation of the iiE criteria, members are awarded with the recognised stamp of certification and may progress from Bronze, through Silver, towards Green.

Elanco UK & Ireland achieves Silver level certification in 2023

The Elanco UK & Ireland affiliate is proud to achieve Silver level certification through Investors in the Environment.

The Elanco Head Office at Hook has been awarded the Investors in the Environment (iiE) Silver award for our continued effort to reduce the environmental impact of our business activities on the environment

The award follows a successful audit of our Environmental Management System in September 2023.

Our work with the iiE supports our global Healthy Purpose goals, and demonstrates our commitment to be a leader in sustainability within the animal health industry.

To achieve this award, we have:

  • Established monitoring of resource use and demonstrated significant reductions in our CO2 emissions.
  • Achieved consistently high rates of recycling of over 80%. Any waste that is not recycled is sent for energy recovery
  • Implemented an award-winning Travel Plan

iiE Awards 2023 Sustainable Transport Champion

At the iiE Awards 2023, we were pleased to win the Sustainable Transport Champion for our travel plan. This included various initiatives, with the following recognised in particular.

  • Our commitment to transition our company car fleet to electric, ending use of ICE by 2030
  • Our car salary sacrifice and cycle to work schemes
  • Measuring the CO2 emissions from our grey fleet and the sizable reduction since the baseline year
  • The ‘Elanco Summer challenge’, sustainable travel competition

Elanco UK & Ireland achieves Bronze level certification in 2022

The Elanco UK and Ireland affiliate is proud to announce that the Head Office Site at Hook has been awarded Bronze Level certification for our efforts in reducing our impact on the environment. The award was granted following the assessment of our environmental plans and systems by the UK not-for-profit organisation ‘Investors in the Environment’ (iiE).

The award is a tangible demonstration of the commitment of our people to minimise the impact of our activities on the global climate and our local environment. It supports the Elanco global Healthy Purpose goals, and shows that we are serious about our ambitions to be a leader in sustainability within the animal health industry.

To achieve this award, we have:

  • Measured and made significant reductions in our Scope 1 and 2 emissions. This includes the direct emissions from our company vehicles, from our office and from the electricity that we purchase
  • Identified our waste streams and implemented a system to ensure that we send nothing to landfill and recycle over 80% of our waste
  • Ensured that the electricity we purchase is from renewable sources
  • Contributed to our local community and environment through voluntary donations

This is the first step towards our ambitions in sustainability and responsible business operations, including our aim to achieve iiE Green certification, through the implementation of projects that reduce our impact on the environment, support our wildlife or contribute to the improvement of society.

Greening our Office

We have made a good start with some initiatives already implemented at the Hook Office aimed at reducing our impact on the environment:

  • Electricity for the office is supplied on a 100% renewable tariff. This does not mean that it is zero carbon – but it’s a step in the right direction. Our heating is also electric, meaning that we burn no gas in the office.
  • Office lighting uses low energy LED bulbs and is on an intelligent management system that adjusts according to exterior light levels. Lighting is controlled by movement sensors, so lights are only on when a space is occupied.
  • No single use plastics, paper cups or non-recyclable items are provided in our kitchens.
  • We have implemented a recycling system which sends more than 80% of waste produced for recycling. What cannot be recycled goes to energy recovery, meaning that none of our waste goes into landfill.
