Mastitis
About mastitis
Mastitis is a common and costly disease of dairy cows, characterized by inflammation of the mammary gland. It is usually caused by bacterial infections and can result in reduced milk production, quality, decreased cow health and fertility. Symptoms of mastitis include swelling of the affected mammary gland, heat, pain, and redness, as well as the presence of pus or other abnormal secretions in the milk. The disease can be treated with anti-inflammatories and antibiotics, but it is also important to implement preventive measures, such as good udder hygiene and management practices, to reduce the risk of infection and spread of the disease. In Ireland, as well as in other countries, the most common causes of mastitis in dairy cows are bacterial infections, and several species of bacteria can be responsible. The most common culprits include Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococci, Escherichia coli. The specific bacteria responsible for mastitis cases can vary depending on factors such as herd size, milking practices, and environmental conditions. It is important for dairy farmers to work with their veterinarian to identify the causative bacteria and implement appropriate treatment and prevention strategies to minimize the impact of mastitis on herd health and production.

Anthelmintic Resistance in Sheep
Anthelmintic resistance is one of the biggest challenges to the health and profitability of sheep and affects the entire sheep industry: a recent study found that parasitic worms has been estimated to cost the European livestock industry more than €1.8 billion per year, with drug-resistance costing at least €38 million per year in production losses and treatment costs.2
As the impact of resistant worms remains invisible until resistance levels reach the tipping point, it is important to include newer actives in worm control plans now. Taking action before there are obvious problems on the farm will help maintain the activity of wormers for the future, as well as allowing lambs to reach their growth potential today.
Act now: find out more about how you can incorporate Zolvix™ in your worm control strategy, for your mid-late season break dose or as part of a routine quarantine treatment for all incoming and returning animals.

Zolvix™ Oral Solution for Sheep
Zolvix™ oral solution is a broad spectrum anthelmintic for the treatment and control of gastrointestinal nematode infections and associated diseases in sheep, including lambs, hoggets, breeding rams and ewes.
- Kills all economically significant gut worms, even worms resistant to 1-BZ, 2-LV and 3-ML wormers.
- Can be used as a routine farm protection (quarantine) dose to clean out incoming stock and protect your farm from resistant worms.
- Recommended as a one-off mid-late season break dose for all lambs to remove worm burdens including any resistant worms. Removing the accumulated resistant worms at this time will allow the lambs to achieve their growth potential and make the most of the late season grass.
- All farms should use once a year to help slow down resistance and preserve the older groups (1,2 and 3)
- Group 4-AD wormer (contains monepantel).
Blowflies
Blowflies are attracted to lay their eggs on areas of soiling or damage (wounds) on the animal, or on carcasses. Therefore, the key to blowfly control is to minimise breeding opportunities by:
- managing deadstock: remove deadstock as quickly as possible, and keep deadstock covered while waiting for collection
- managing flock health: minimise faecal soiling through good worm control and fleece management, and through treating wounds, including foot infections
- using a preventative treatment early in the season: prevent established blowfly strike in the flock to protect the sheep and to prevent those first waves of flies from breeding. Doing this will massively reduce blowfly numbers, and strike risk, later in the season.
So what preventative treatments are available?
Insect Growth Regulators (IGRs) are not insecticidal, and instead work by preventing the harmless first stage blowfly larvae developing into the damaging second and third stage maggots that are responsible for flystrike.
The Elanco CLiK™ portfolio, made up of CLiK™ EXTRA, CLiK™ and CLiKZiN™ are IGRs. These are the only products to benefit from FleeceBind™, a a technology that allows the product to spread and bind to give full fleece protection*, minimising the risk of fly strike.
The CLiK™ portfolio of IGRs break the blowfly lifecycle. Organophosphates (OPs) and Synthetic Pyrethroids (SPs) are insecticidal - they kill adult and larval stages of the blowfly on contact. The Elanco blowfly portfolio is completed with the synthetic pyrethroid Vector™.
CLik Brand (Blowfly Control for Sheep)
The CLiK™ brands are the only IGRs containing FleeceBind™ technology which provides full fleece protection*. It helps spread the formulation from tip to base of the fleece and binds it strongly in place, sticking it to the wool.
